Many people have their wisdom teeth removed because they’re impacted, meaning they’re growing in at an angle and pushing against other teeth.
Removing wisdom teeth can often be a necessary procedure due to them becoming impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can grow at an angle and press against other teeth, leading to the dentist recommending their removal.
What are the signs to look for before the extraction of my wisdom tooth?
- I have some PAIN: Look for symptoms like pain, swollen gum around the wisdom tooth area (it can be a pericoronitis, meaning an inflammation of the gum around the crown of the tooth), fever, or a swollen lymph node (try to palpate your gland under the jawbone (mandibular jaw) and compare the left and the right: is it swollen? painful? mobile or hard? all these clinical signs will indicate if you need to remove your wisdom tooth.
- My tooth is coming through: If you don’t have any clear symptoms (if you have a high pain tolerance, you won’t be able to see the problem, it does not mean that you don’t have any problem) try to look into the mouth with a mirror. If you can see or feel the wisdom tooth coming through the gum, there is a high chance that bacteria will penetrate inside the jawbone.
- It is bleeding when I brush my teeth: If you have a bad smell, or some bleeding when you brush this area, there is a strong chance there is a chronic inflammation (meaning that needs to be treated, chronic inflammation leads to more severe issue, and your immune system is constantly working to reduce the stress induced into the tissue).
- I don’t have room for my wisdom tooth: If you have some sensitivity in this area especially with cold or hot, it is possible that the wisdom tooth has started damaging its front tooth (called the second molar). In this case, an x-ray is recommended to check.
- I have some heart issue: The wisdom teeth are linked through its Meridian to the heart. So a chronic inflammation or infection in the wisdom tooth area can directly impact the heart, and vice versa. In any doubt, connect your oral surgeon and your cardiologist.
In short: any symptoms (pain, swelling, fever, swollen lymph node, any clinical sign (bleeding, redness on the gum), please visit your oral surgeon and he will be able to explain, to show you and to demonstrate if there is a need to remove the wisdom tooth in your specific case, or not.
Wisdom tooth removal can be done for both preventive and therapeutic reasons.
In general, the jawbone is becoming smaller and smaller so we have less space for the wisdom teeth. We also have orthodontic treatment when we are young, and straight teeth meaning less space for the wisdom teeth. I would rather remove the wisdom teeth than the premolars teeth. Since decades, our food become softer as well, is there a correlation with our reduced sized jawbone?
Some studies show as well that mothers breastfeed less their babies than before, the baby is not stimulating the jaw muscles resulting in a smaller jawbone.
No pain does not mean that you should not remove your wisdom tooth, especially if you have a chronic inflammation in your mouth.
In any case, we suggest to visit your favorite oral surgeon, to check the clinical and radiological conditions of your teeth.
It is essential to do it following a biological protocol to avoid further complications (necrosis of the bone, inflammation and infection) and to ensure a quick and painless recovery
The procedure itself is now quite straightforward. Stop listening or reading about bad experiences, time has changed! Now with the biological protocol, we boost your immune system before proceeding with the treatment. Vitamins, lifestyle, nutrition are few of the elements that will influence the success of the treatment.
Ozone, laser, PRF, piezotome are now part of the biological arsenal and easily replace antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and other chemical drugs.
The technique itself has become minimally invasive, leading to reduced post-operative consequences.
