Biological cleaning, or how to level up your scale and polish game

At Dr. Roze BioDental, we offer so much more than your average scale and polish appointment when it comes to dental cleanings. As a biodentistry clinic, we strive to offer our patients a holistic and natural approach to treatments — and yes, this extends to dental hygeine.

If you haven’t had the chance to experience our biological cleanings with our team of hygienists at Dr. Roze BioDental, read through to see if this could be one way for you level up your hygiene and overall wellness game.

*This is a general outline of what you can expect with our different biological cleaning treatments. However, please understand that each patient is different and we adapt to their unique requirements.

First, what’s a scale and polish?

A scale and polish is a procedure performed during a dental cleaning appointment. It involves two main steps: scaling and polishing.

  • Scaling: Your hygienists removes plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth, especially in areas where they accumulate, such as along the gum line and in between teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth and can lead to tooth decay and gum disease if not removed regularly. Tartar forms when plaque hardens due to mineral deposits from saliva.
  • Polishing: After scaling, the teeth are polished to remove surface stains and smooth out the tooth surfaces. Polishing helps to make the teeth look brighter and feel smoother.

Here is what your scale and polish appointment will look like at Dr. Roze BioDental:

  1. First you’ll start with an ozonated water pre-rinse.
  2. Then, your hygienist will perform an oral screening and basic periodontal exam.
  3. You’ll get personalized oral hygiene instructions from your hygienist…
  4. … before moving on to scaling.
  5. Lastly, you’ll end with polishing and EMS airflow.

How does a biological cleaning differ from a conventional scale and polish?

As we just discussed, a scale and polish will remove tartar, plaque, and stains from the surface of the teeth and around the gums. A biological cleaning takes it a step further by naturally disinfecting.

Think of your kitchen countertop after cooking an extensive recipe.

When it’s time to clean up, you’ll first do a quick brush off of all the crumbs and scraps you left behind (scale), then grab a damp cloth to wipe down of the splashes of oil around the stove and maybe some curry sauce before it permanently stains anything (polish).

This right here is your conventional scale and polish. But you wouldn’t stop there, would you?

The last, most important step would be to deep clean the area — or go in with a biological cleaning to naturally disinfect.

What to expect during your comprehensive biological cleaning at Dr. Roze BioDental

The key differences in our comprehensive biological cleaning vs. a conventional scale and polish are that your teeth and gums are naturally disinfected with ozone, and we do not use fluoride or any chemicals.

Here’s what your Bio cleaning appointment will look like:

  1. You’ll start with an ozonated water pre-rinse. Ozonated water destroys a variety of bacteria, fungi, algae and parasites on contact, which is the key principle behind ozonated water therapy. It has as well anti-inflammatory properties.
  2. Then, your hygienist will perform an oral screening and basic periodontal exam.
  3. You’ll get personalized oral hygiene instructions from your hygienist…
  4. …before moving onto an ozonated water scaling.
  5. Then comes the polishing (no fluoride, no chemicals) and EMS airflow.
  6. After that, you’ll receive a dental conditioning treatment with hydroxyapatite to remineralize and strengthen your teeth.
  7. Finally, your hygienist will apply our ROZE coconut ozone oil topically on the gums.

The complex biological cleaning experience

If you’re looking to go the extra mile on your wellness journey, or preparing for oral surgery, we have what we call our “complex biological cleaning”.

You’ll get everything we’ve seen in the biological cleaning, pus:

  • Your hygienist will apply a plaque and biofilm disclosing solution to highlight the plaque.
  • We’ll take a blood sample for a complete blood count, check for LDL and Vitamin D.
  • You’ll receive two-week pack of Dentasan oral health probiotics to help rebalance your oral microbiome. Remember, your oral health and gut health are linked and any imbalance in your mouth will have an impact on your body.
  • You’ll take home a glass jar of our ROZE coconut ozonated oil.

We hope this clearly explains the different dental cleanings we offer at Dr. Roze BioDental: scale and polish, comprehensive biological cleaning, and complex biological cleaning.
